Why We Love Mary: A May Reflection from Two Catholic Mamas
By Mama Jane, Wisdom Wellness Coaching
As we step into the beautiful month of May, traditionally dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, it's the perfect time to reflect on her significance in our faith and daily lives.
Embracing the Season of Renewal
Spring has always been a symbol of renewal and growth. This year, the season brought its share of challenges—unexpected weather patterns and personal transitions. Yet, amidst the chaos, the Church reminds us that Easter isn't just a day but a season spanning 50 days, offering us extended time to bask in the joy of the Resurrection.
The liturgical calendar, with its rhythms and seasons, provides a framework that mirrors our own life's ebbs and flows. Just as nature blossoms anew, our spiritual lives are invited to rejuvenate, especially during this Easter season.
May: A Month of Milestones
May isn't only about honoring Mary; it's also a time of significant milestones within the Church. Many children receive their First Holy Communion, and young adults are confirmed, marking their deepening commitment to the faith.
These sacraments are not just rituals but profound encounters with the divine. Witnessing our children partake in them fills our hearts with pride and gratitude. It's a testament to their growth and our guidance as parents.
Personal Journeys to Marian Devotion
Neither Mama Vicki nor I was raised in homes where Marian devotion was emphasized. My first profound encounter with Mary was during college when friends questioned my reverence for her, mistaking it for idolatry. This prompted me to seek clarity from a priest, who simply stated, "Jesus loved Mary because she was His mother. We love her because He did." That perspective resonated deeply with me.
Vicki shared a touching memory of her son's baptism, where the priest, deeply devoted to Mary, introduced her to the concept of maternal intercession. This experience led her to discover the Mothers' Manual, a prayer book that became a cornerstone in her spiritual journey.
Mary: A Model of Motherhood
Mary's life encompasses both profound joy and deep sorrow. From the Annunciation to the Crucifixion, she experienced the full spectrum of motherhood. Reflecting on her title, "Mother of Sorrows," we recognize that sorrow isn't a deviation from motherhood but an intrinsic part.
As mothers, we face challenges and heartaches in our own lives. Turning to Mary provides solace, knowing she truly understands our struggles. Her unwavering faith and strength serve as a beacon, guiding us through our trials.
Clarifying Misconceptions
A common misconception is that Catholics worship Mary. In truth, we venerate her, acknowledging her unique role in salvation history. Prayers like the Rosary are meditative, focusing on the life of Christ through Mary's perspective.
Mary acts as an intercessor, bringing our prayers to her Son. Just as we might ask friends or family to pray for us, we seek Mary's intercession, trusting in her closeness to Jesus.
Practical Ways to Honor Mary This May
  • Pray the Rosary Daily: Dedicate time each day to meditate on the mysteries of the Rosary, drawing closer to Jesus through Mary.
Read Marian Literature: Delve into books that explore Mary's life and virtues to deepen your understanding and connection.
